Engine cuts out and won't start

Post by crimmer96 »

Hi all, I've been the owner of a 1.8 carb gt2 for a few months and the car runs like a dream except it has had an intermittent issue when the car will lose power and cut out. It doesn't start again for atleast half an hour (almost as if the engine has flooded) but it only ever happens after it has been driving at temp then with the engine off between 20-30 minutes. It has the 32/36 Weber carb that has in my ownership been stripped, cleaned and rebuilt and set up by my local mechanic so I doubt it is over fuelling from the carb. Any ideas on what may be the cause would be greatly appreciated.

seems like your fuel lines are blocking up from rust deposits from the tank and/or filler neck. recommend to check those and replace fuel lines too. also you should see an inline fuel filter near the carb ? is it clean ?

If it stops next time undo the fuel pipe attached to the fuel filter at the tank end and blow down the fuel line you should hear bubbles from the tank. Try and restart the car and if it starts and runs ok you may have rust etc in the fuel tank and a blacked fuel pick up.
Could also be a split carb flange, do you have a standard air box and a bracket holding the front of the airbox to the rocker cover?

Hi sorry for delayed reply and thanks for the help, the car has been running well lately (I've found a bottle of redex to a full tank eases the issue) but yet again it has begun to cut out. The inline fuel filter is slightly darkened at the bottom but I'm awaiting a replacement. The fuel tank is brand new and the filler neck only has slight sandy deposit in it visible with a torch shined into it, no holes or rot. It is a standard airbox with a modified bracket to fit.

take the carb off, get some carb cleaner, go to town on it!!! this will be the problem more than likely, ive had this recently on my weber. its miniscule particles that make it stall.
