indicators/ charge light problem

Post by Village Idiots »

Anyone got a possible reason for this problem on my '79 Storm?:
When I use the indicators the charge warning light flashes in time to the indicators and the rev counter flickers. The charge warning light then stays on and the fuel guage falls to nearly empty. What may be relevant is when I switch the ignition on to start the car there is a fairly high pitched buzzing which appears to go on start up.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Jem

Hmm sounds a little strange I’ve not heard of this before. I’d say firstly check the earths as dodgy earths can cause Allsorts of problems.

Where does the buzz come from? Is it fuse box/ relay area?

Earth to instruments is what I would look at, try and make another earth lead from the instruments to a bracket behind the dash and see if that makes any difference.

May not be the same as a mk2 scala but there is a multiple earth point to the right of the fuse box where several circuits are earthed. Also check the plugs on the back of the fuse box--corroded pins cause havoc with the electrics--caused by water leakage through bulkhead grommets or panel joint under windscreen rubber between front wing and scuttle--mastic missing.--Gerry

Believe it or not, I've cured this by charging the battery and adjusting the alternator belt to very tight. I've had trouble with the 10mm belts my factor says are listed as they go all the way down to the bottom of the alternator pulley so don't grip the sides as effectively. I sourced a 12mm wide belt from a local specialist and am trialing this on my Scala.
