Horns - Beep Beep!

Post by hiltow »

Am I right in thinking that the horn on a Mk2 was, as standard, an air-horn?

The horn on mine has two, red plastic trumpets powered by a small cylindrical compressor and all mounted under the front crossmember at the nearside. The compressor on mine has 'Maserati - Made in Italy' on it, which seems unusual, as I would have expected an normal electric horn. I've always thought this an asset, as it really does pack a punch.

The drawings in Etka do show a kind of duel-tone airhorn layout, but I'm just wondering if this is original or whether someone has upgraded it in the past? Somehow, I could imagine such a feature being fitted by Karmann to what is, after all a specialist car that was handbuilt.

What do others have - especially those Mk2's made at the same time as mine (1985/86)?

no they should be two small electric horns under the battery tray bolted to the chassis leg.
what you have sounds like an aftermarket set of air horns. must be very loud and great for tooting dithering drivers.
i have the standard horn operated by the steering wheel horn button, then i have a dixie horn consisting of 5 of those red plastic air horns conected to a secret button.

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

The car's otherwise untouched from new, so the previous (and first) owner must have added it. He was a defence aeronautical engineer, so he must have fancied upgrading to 'air' horns!

I posted recently about feeling quite vulnerable on the roads thesedays driving the Scirocco as it seems to be dwarfed by everything on the road - the airhorns are a definite plus here, giving the car 'presence' - a short, loud blast (no tunes though!).
