Hey mark,
No rear pressure reg, made that mistake to start with haha and tried them everywhere.

Hopefully the new cylinders work if not I’m sure you’ll hear from me again lol

Are you fitting brand new drums and shoes? It is sometimes a tight fit when they are all new. Where did you get the kit from?

Then the smaller rear wheel cylinders are the ones you need.

If your car is a 92 I’m surprised there is no regulator?
Have you got a picture of the bottom 2 brake lines coming out of the master cylinder in the engine bay?

Yeah all the bits are new and I expected them to be tight but this is silly tight, to the point where the wheel does turn.

and nah I was speaking to Andy at heritage and he said the pressure reg is on the rear axel and there was nothing there on mine. The the new cylinders were the same as the old size wise as well
But bare with I’ll try and get a picture

Early Mk1 Golfs and Mk2 Golfs had a big valve with brake lines going to it fitted underneath the car and a big spring which fits to the rear beam, as weight is added there is more brake pressure sent to the rear.
That is what VW heritage is talking about.

So we have worked out that mine does in fact have a pressure reg for the rear brakes but it’s under the master cylinder not on the rear axel.
This in my head would mean it would need the other cylinders...

But the regulator cylinders only have a single bolt hole. And the non reg have 2. The ones I’ve taken off match the cylinders with no pressure regulator?

I’m so confused which ones I need now as iirc the pressure regulator ones are bigger and if I can’t get the drums on now how on earth will I once the bigger cylinders are in?

After soon googling I may have made sense of something...
Does this sound right...

I feel the different cylinder is for if the car has a LOAD pressure regulator on the rear axel... which changes the brake pressure dependent on the rear of the vehicles weight.

Which means there would be a brake pressure regulator under the master but would mean I have the correct cylinders [emoji846]
Well the right type anyway even if they are crap quality

Have you tried the old drums? You may be able to fit them and use them for a month or 2 then swop onto the new drums once the shoes have bedded in a little and worn down?

The wheel cylinders should have 2 holes for the bolts that hold in onto the back plate and 1 hole for the bleed nipple, 1 hole for the brake pipe.

I could be wrong but it’s the diameter which is bigger not the length of the wheel cylinders?

Ah ok.. I’m pretty sure I’ve worked it out in the end and the bit on the rear axel is the load regulator rather than brake as all the other bits match up.

And annoying the old drums haven’t got a thread hence me breaking them down in the first place.
Hopefully all will be find when the new cylinders arrive but I’ll be sure to update

Keep at it, I know it’s bloody anyonning when you can get these things to fit.
On my Golf I had a nightmare fitting some new drums and shoes, I painted the new drums red and when I went out for a drive the 1st time the drums got rather hot and melted the paint! One side I could spin the wheel but the other side was difficult to spin, after a short slow drive around the block they did free up.
Once cooled down I re bleed the brakes and they was ok after that.

Only just seen your post Pete sorry mate! It’s been a manic few weeks.
I do have some good news however with the new cylinders it all fits and they are back together!
Just need to replace the brake line drivers side which I’m sure is going to be a pig and then hopefully mot!!
